On the River of Rome Flows Tosca by Giacomo Puccini
From July 21 to 25 at 9:30 PM, the opera boat will set sail from the banks of the Tiber River, near Ponte Garibaldi, and navigate toward Castel Sant’Angelo, hosting a live performance of Tosca on board.
A show conceived and organized by the Cultural Association Idea Roma to enchant both Romans and tourists.
Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece will be performed by three outstanding artists: Elena Lo Forte as the leading role, Fabio Andreotti as Mario Cavaradossi, and Alessio Quaresima as Baron Scarpia. Three powerful and refined voices, able to convey the emotional intensity of the opera even in an unconventional setting such as a river. The musical direction is entrusted to Maestro Sergio Oliva.
“Tosca Along the Tiber” is a project that aims to celebrate two Italian treasures: opera and the Tiber River, through an original and accessible format for all.
Thanks to the collaboration with the event Lungo il Tevere Roma …un fiume di cultura ("Along the Tiber Rome …a river of culture") and with the support of the Lazio Region, the riverbanks become a place of gathering, sharing, and wonder. After the success of 2018, the opera boat returns renewed for the summer of 2025, offering a free and open performance that blends emotion and culture in the heart of the Eternal City.
The Rome of Tosca: an exhibition between imagination and reality
The chosen opera for this performance could only be Tosca. Not just because it is one of Giacomo Puccini’s most famous and beloved works, but because it is deeply Roman. Performing it along the Tiber means multiplying its layers of meaning: each Roman scene echoes through the very places from which it originates—such as Castel Sant’Angelo.
Alongside the musical performance, the 2025 edition of Tosca Along the Tiber will also feature a visual exhibition with images projected onto a videowall installed on the boat—centered on the theme “The Rome of Tosca.”
A project curated by RomePhotoLab – @romephotolab – a permanent visual arts laboratory based in Rome and promoter of the International Photography Festival, whose third edition will take place this September at the museum hub of Villa Altieri.
The two selected photographers, Elisabetta Felici and Pierluigi Meduri, through their shots, aimed to explore the opera’s imagery through a contemporary lens.
The exhibition enriches the performance, transforming the Tiber into an open-air cultural laboratory.
